Hot stone massage is one of the most deeply relaxing therapeutic treatments available today, and it’s my favorite to give and to receive. This ancient practice combines the skilled touch of massage therapy with smooth, heated stones to create an experience that is both indulgent and healing.
A Brief History
Hot stone therapy traces back thousands of years across multiple cultures. Indigenous peoples in North America heated stones in fire pits for healing ceremonies, while ancient Chinese practitioners used heated stones to improve the function of internal organs. The modern version we enjoy today draws from these traditions while incorporating contemporary massage techniques.
How It Works
During a hot stone massage, we place smooth, flat basalt stones (chosen for their heat-retaining properties) in a professional heater filled with water. Once warmed to between 110-145°F, these stones become powerful tools for:
Loosening tight muscles before deeper massage
Increasing blood flow to targeted areas
Promoting deeper relaxation
Easing muscle stiffness and pain
Reducing stress and anxiety
The Hot Stone Experience
What can you expect during your first hot stone massage?
Your massage begins on a comfortable table in a peaceful room
The warm stones are placed along your spine, in your palms, possibly with a thin cotton layer between your skin and the stones, depending on heat preference
Larger stones may be used to massage your muscles directly
The heat penetrates deep into muscle tissue, creating a sensation that many describe as "melting away tension"
Many clients report feeling a profound sense of grounding and balance after their session, with benefits lasting well beyond the treatment room.
DIY Hot Stone Techniques
While nothing replaces a professional treatment, you can enjoy some benefits at home:
Purchase smooth river rocks from a craft store, clean them thoroughly, and warm them in hot (not boiling) water. Place them on tight areas like shoulders or lower back while relaxing. Can Not Stress This Enough: Always test the temperature before placing stones on skin! It it’s uncomfortable, or feels too hot, then it is too hot. Avoid burning your skin, obvious, but necessary to trust your instincts here. Do not microwave hot stones!
Have you ever experienced a hot stone massage? If not, it might be the perfect treatment to try for your next self-care day! Some of my clients book hot stone massages exclusively and receive them once a month.
